The site is rather common: someone in a wheel chair unable to use their lower body, or worse, unable to function from their neck down because of an accident. You may even know one of these people. They all have one thing in common: spinal nerve injury. To the majority of us, one of the more famous and recent cases involving spinal trauma is that of Christopher Reeve, known to most of us as Superman. Reeve was riding his horse when he fell off, landed on the back of his head and twisted his neck. His spine was damaged near the second cervical vertebrae; that being two vertebrae away from the base of the skull. He states that after his accident he saw a handbook written in 1990 that didn't even mention anyone higher than [the fourth cervical vertebrae] because 70 percent of them didn't live longer than five days. I am very lucky my injury happened at a time when treatment and surgery had improved. Dr. Cotman from UCI, who worked with Reeve says that Reeve remains optimistic that a c ure is only a few million dollars away. II. Prior to the end of the Second World War, if a person survived a severe spinal cord injury, the injury still usually resulted in their early death. This was because of complications that accompanied the injury, such as infections to the kidneys and lungs. Though the development of new antibiotics has greatly improved life expectancy, until recently medical science had not been able to restore nerve function. III. According to researchers at the University of Alabama using data from the regional SCI Centers, there are 7,800 traumatic spinal cord injuries each year in the US. Yet these numbers do not represent accurate figures since 4,860 per year, die before reaching the hospital. Current estimates are that 250,000-400,000 individuals live with spinal cord injury or dysfunction; forty-four percent of these occur in motor vehicle accidents. Within the last five years, a great many things have been happening in the area of neurological research. Research and treatment involving spinal and nerve injury has progressed considerably. The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and all branching nerves. There are two parts: the central nervous system, or CNS, and the peripheral nervous system, or PNS. When the spine is crushed or bent in an extreme accident, the spinal cord inside is severely bruised and compressed, causing localized injury and death to many of the nerve cells and their fibers. The People of the State of California v. Scott Peterson Free Online Research Papers Scott Peterson now sits in San Quentin State Prison in California. He is there serving a sentence which will ultimately end in death by lethal injection once his appeals run out. He is serving this sentence for murder of his wife, Laci Peterson, and his unborn son, Conner, who he reported missing on Christmas eve, 2002. At first, this case seemed like it was more of a missing person case, not necessarily a murder case, and Scott was initially definitely not a suspect as Laci’s family and friends stood behind him and maintained their belief that he was innocent. It was not until other matters came to light that they began to question Scott’s involvement in the disappearance of Laci, which eventually led to Scott being where he is today. The first issue was Scott’s inconsistencies in the stories that he was telling the police. The things he was telling them from one day to the other were different. That he had a business meeting initially, then he retracted that story and said that he was in the marina fishing and came home to find Laci gone, but when asked what he was fishing for, he could not provide a good answer. Then of course it came out that Scott had a mistress, as well as other extramarital affairs. The mistress, Amber Frey, sought the police’s assistance when she realized that the man she was â€Å"in love† with was actually married and that his wife had disappeared, therefore she also feared for her safety. Around the time that it came out about Scott’s affairs, the family and friends that once supported him began to withdraw, believing that Scott in fact did murder Laci and Conner, not because of his affairs per se, but because he told Ms. Frey, 15 days before Laci disappe ared, that he â€Å"lost† his wife and that this would be his first Christmas alone. On April 14, 2003, a male fetus washed ashore north of the marina where Scott had been boating the day Laci disappeared, which was positively identified as Conner. The next day, a female torso, missing her head, hands and feet washed ashore in the same area. These remains were positively identified as Laci’s. Autopsies could not be performed on the bodies due to the significant decomposition, so a specific cause of death could not be determined. On April 18, 2003, Scott Peterson was arrested in the parking lot of a golf course. At the time of his arrest, Peterson was carrying $15,000, four cell phones, credit cards belonging to multiple family members, camping equipment, shoes, clothing, and his brother’s driver’s license. His hair and beard color had also been changed from brown to blonde. Peterson went on trial in June of 2004, not in the city of Modesto, due to the fact that there may not be a fair trial, but instead to nearby Redwood City. The prosecution said the motive behind Peterson’s actions were due to his affair with Amber Frey as well as money. They believed he killed his wife due to insurmountable debt as well as his desire to be single. The defense argued that there was no direct evidence to connect Scott Peterson to the murders of Laci and Conner, but that all the evidence uncovered was circumstantial. In fact, the only DNA evidence that was found was one of Laci’s hairs in a pair of pliers on Scott’s boat. The defense went on to say that a satanic cult had murdered Laci in some sort of sacrificial ritual. In fact, that was the defense’s argument, but the jury didnt buy it. The state did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Scott Peterson killed Laci and Conner. On March 16, 2005, Scott Peterson was sentenced to death by lethal injection for the double murder of his wife and unborn son as well as ordered to pay $10,000 towards Laci’s funeral. At some point later on after sentencing, the judge who sent Peterson to jail (Alfred Delucchi) expressed some doubts about the imposition of the death penalty on Scott. The death penalty was an option because Peterson was convicted of murdering two people. Under California law, a fetus is considered a person in this context, which is why he was convicted of a double murder. California has determinant sentencing laws, meaning the judge may impose one of three terms – low term, mid term or high term of a person convicted of a felony. These are exact terms and not on the same line as a person convicted in another state of â€Å"two to five years†. Crimes of heat or passion versus premeditated, cold-blooded murders are what differentiate life sentences from the death penalty. Of the states that allow the death penalty, California is the slowest in moving toward executions. It could easily be 10 to 20 years before Scott Peterson is injected. There are more than 600 inmates on death row and since 1978, when the death penalty was reinstated in California, only 11 people have been executed. The two people in the friendship are not on the same level when they are together. For example, in Anita and Me, Meena is never seen as more superior to Anita and Piggy is never seen as superior to Ralph. Despite this fact, the reader can obviously tell that both Meena and Piggy are more intellectually superior to Anita and Ralph. These two friendships in both books undergo changes as incidents occur such as the forming of Jacks tribe in Lord of the Flies and when Anitas other friends abandon her. These changes really force both Anita and Ralph, the more superior of the two friendships to rely heavily on the inferior of the friendships, Piggy and Meena for emotional support. If these parts of the two books were looked at in detail, the reader would see that both Ralph and Anita usually feel as if they cannot continue and Meena and Piggy are usually the people who help them through their difficult times and provide support. This is another way in which Piggy is depicted as inferior to Ralph. Another way in which Ralph and Anita are described as greater than Piggy and Meena are when they meet. When Anita talks to Meena for the first time, she assumes that she is more superior to Meena. then snatched the bag off me and began walking away as she ate When Anita meets Meena, she snatches a bag of sweets from her and starts to walk away. She expects Meena to follow and what I find surprising is that Meena seems to think that this is fine and she feels happy to follow her a few paces behind. Meena feels privileged to be in Anitas company. Anita realises this and uses it to her advantage. Anita has got used to realising that she is normally the leader of a group and that she has the ability to exert a lot of power. Ralph also assumes that he is superior when he meets Piggy. When Piggy asks what Ralphs name is, Ralph does not return the gesture: The fat boy waited to be asked his name in turn buy this proffer of acquaintance was not made Here Ralph is portrayed as quite arrogant. We can see that Ralph obviously feels in some way superior to this fat boy and therefore he feels that he is not the same level as him. Throughout the book, Ralph has a certain amount of superiority over Piggy and uses it often. When Jack, Simon and Ralph explore the island for the first time and Piggy asks to come, Ralph embaraces him by refusing to let him come. The same is done in Anita and Me, as Anita is throughout the book more superior to Meena. Both Meena and Piggy do not belong to the groups that are formed in the books. Piggy is far too intellectual and mature for the games played and he is the odd one out of the group, as is Simon. Meena too does not fit in to Anitas group. She describes herself as too young for Anitas consideration and too old for the children. Even when she does join Anitas group, she sometimes feels out of place. Towards the end of both books, both Anita and Ralph find that they need support when their close friends leave them. In Anita and Me, Anita experiences this when her mother leaves: she always seemed older than her peers. When Anitas mother and the poet leave her, Anita feels depressed and lonely. Meena, although she is angry with her, feels sorry for Anita and tries to comfort and support her. This shows how Meena, even though she is portrayed as insuperior to Anita, is the more stable of the two girls. Meena has two loving parent who look after her well and a baby brother while Anita lives with her unreliable mother who is hardly there for her and a father who sees her very rarely. Ralph also finds himself in this situation when the boys divide into two groups and Ralph is left only with Simon and Piggy: Piggy Uh? What are we going to do? Piggy looked at the conch. You could- Call an assembly? Ralph laughed sharply as he said the word and Piggy frowned. Here we can see the difference in Ralphs way of talking to Piggy. We can see that Ralph has no idea of what to do now that Jack has made his own tribe. Ralph now finds that he is relying on Piggy to help and support him through his time of need. Ralph also uses the word we instead of I. This shows how Ralph feels that both him and Piggy are now in their own tribe. It also shows how Ralph is letting Piggy be on the same level as him by using we. Another way in, which the friendship of Anita and Meena and the friendship between Ralph and Piggy are similar, is the ending of the friendship. At the end of the book, Meena realises that Anita is not the person she should be a best friend with: I dont give a toss what your sister [Anita] does, Tracey. Yow can tell her that from me. At this point, Meena has realised that Anita has not treated her as well as she should have been treated. Meena learns this from making friends with two other people who treat her well and are true friends. When Meena returns from hospital, she doesnt socialise much and is happy doing things alone. Anita, jealous of her happiness and the love she receives from her parents, sends threatening notes to her in the hope of scaring Meena. At this point we can really see that Meena is superior to Anita as Anita tries to make a desperate attempt at trying to feel more superior and secure by threatening her. The same happens in Lord of the Flies. After Piggy has died, Ralph realises what a great friend Piggy really was to him and how much he needs him when Jacks tribe turn against him: And in the middle of them, with filthy body, unwiped nose, Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of mans heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy. Here we can see that Ralphs image of a strong, powerful young man is lost and we see him as a young naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve boy in contrast to Piggy who is described as wise. Before, Piggy was portrayed as a fat, asthmatic boy who was inferior to Ralph but now we see that Piggy is superior to Ralph. Ralph realises this and feels bad in the way he treated Piggy. Towards the end of both books, the characters who were portrayed as superior: Anita and Ralph find it hard to cope when Meena and Piggy leave them. In Anita and Me, when Meena breaks the friendship between herself and Anita, Anita begins to find that she is jealous of Meena and sends her threatening notes. Similarly in Lord of the Flies, when Piggy dies, Ralph finds it hard to cope. He is left all alone and is abandoned by his so-called friends who he preferred to Piggy in the beginning. In both cases we find how much Ralph and Anita depended on Piggy and Meena to make them feel superior. While in actual fact, Meena and Piggy were the superior ones.
